Storm Damage: The effects on trees of extreme weather conditions can be disastrous. Wind throw, where the whole tree and roots are blown over, and wind break, where the main trunk snaps, render the trees beyond repair. In less serious conditions branches may be broken off or split. Lightning can completely destroy a tree or, in certain circumstances, only superficial damage may be apparent. After the storm has subsided, trees should be inspected for any signs of damage.
Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum)
Native to China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, the dainty Japanese maple has been cultivated in Japan for centuries, long valued for its attractive, colourful foliage and also a popular bonsai tree. Its specific name is reference to the trees distinctive hand-shaped leaves. Introduced to Europe in 1820, the Japanese maple is now available in hundreds of different cultivars, varying in leaf colour (from green and yellow to red and purple), leaf shape and size, Japanese maples with red coloured leaves being especially popular. The trees graceful shape combined with its striking foliage has made it an extremely popular ornamental tree, widely planted in gardens and parks.
