There is the accusation that tree surgery is inimical to wildlife conservation through the removal of dead wood in trees. If such works is carried out in woodlands where there is no public danger this is a perfectly justifiable statement. However, where trees are growing in public parks, urban areas and highways there is the overriding responsibility for public safety. In such public situations tree surgery operations can be not only aesthetically desirable but essential if owners are to face up to public responsibilities.
Leyland Cypress (X Cupessocyparis Leylandii)
Created in Britain during the late nineteenth century, this vigorous hybrid, widely planted as a fast growing hedging plant, has become the subject of much controversy in recent years. It originated on the Leighton Park estate, Powys, as a cross between a Nootka Cypress and a Monterey Cypress and was subsequently grown from cuttings. Unless carefully pruned the Leyland Cypress can grow rapidly out of hand and so has been the cause of many disputes between neighbours. Its dense foliage, however, makes it a popular nesting choice for birds, which appreciate the good cover it provides.
