Tree surgery is an aspect of arboriculture, which has been defined as the production, selection, planting, cultivation and maintenance of woody plants for amenity. By that definition, arboriculture must work in close co-operation with its allied professionals of horticulture, forestry and landscape design, construction and maintenance.
Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus Libani)
This majestic, slow-growing, long-living tree has long been a symbol of immortality and strength. It is mentioned many times in the bible, and its wood is thought to have been used to build King Solomon's temple. Its natural habitat is found in Syria, the Taurus Mountains in Turkey, and Mount Lebanon. As its name suggests, it is closely associated with Lebanon so much so, that its distinctive outline appears on the Lebanese flag. In fact for the first 40 years of its life it grows in a conical shape, before developing its distinctive level foliage plates. During the eighteenth century it became the fashionable tree to plant in the gardens and estates of stately homes and today is a popular ornamental tree for parks.
